Dog Portrait Commissions

A beautifully painted dog portrait preserves the memory of your pet and makes a wonderful gift for yourself or another dog lover. I aim to make the process of commissioning a painting or portrait as trouble-free and reassuring as possible from the time you pay your deposit until your portrait has been delivered safely into your hands. My goal is to have clients and collectors who are ecstatic about the work I create for them!

Portraits are done in watercolor and portray your dog realistically. The sizes listed below indicate the size of the paper on which your dog’s portrait will be painted. I paint on on heavyweight, professional quality watercolor paper using professional grade pigments. Completed portraits are delivered matted (but not framed). Prices listed are for and head-and-neck view of a single dog; add $125 per additional dog in the same portrait.

If you want a full body portrait, scenes that include dogs in motion, sizes not listed, or have any special requirements, contact me to discuss them and get a quote.

16 x 20, $350

Fine Art and Illustration Commissions

Fine art commissions are for works that include dogs but are not specifically portraits. Subject matter, composition, and other elements will vary in accordance with what you wish the painting to depict. Illustration commissions address specific topics for specific purposes and as such, may have constraints or requirements to which the painting must adhere. Since requirements for fine art and illustration commissions can vary so much, please contact me to discuss your requirements for either one.

Policies and Process Details

All work requires either upfront payment in full or a deposit to begin work. For work requiring a deposit, should you decide to cancel the commission before work on your portrait has begun, I will refund your deposit less any photography fees (see below) and a $25 administration fee. Once I notify you that work has begun, no refund will be made should you cancel the commission.

Your satisfaction with my work is guaranteed. If you are not happy with either after review of the final digital proof and any necessary corrections, I will not bill you for the balance due. However, when commissions are canceled or fail to meet your requirements, I retain the right to use the painting for whatever purposes I choose with no further recompense to you.

Delivery dates are estimates only and may be delayed for many reasons. After your project is on the easel and has my focused attention, I will provide a more accurate delivery date. I email frequent progress reports once work begins on a project so you can be reassured about progress.

Project Process & Payment

Once you decide to commission a work from me, the process goes more or less as follows:

  1. You pay either full price or deposit using the buttons above, which reserves your place in my work queue.
  2. I get in touch with you to discuss your requirements and next steps.
  3. I email you a summary of your requirements as I understand them, based on our discussion.
  4. You provide appropriate digital or print reference photos if necessary. Note: If you are within a reasonable distance of my studio, we can arrange for me to take reference photos of your dog(s) for an additional fee of $100, payable with your initial deposit. If you provide photographs that were taken by a professional photographer, you must include a written, signed permission from that photographer to use of their photograph(s) as references for your dog’s painted portrait.
  5. Your project gets assigned the next available slot in the queue and I email you with an estimated completion date.
  6. Work begins on your project when it is at the top of the queue. As work proceeds, I keep in touch about progress. Generally once I start a portrait, it is my sole focus until it is finished.
  7. When your painting is completed, I email you a digital image of the final version for review. Minor adjustments are made as necessary.
  8. Once you approve the work, I bill you via PayPal for the balance due plus shipping costs.
  9. When I receive your final payment, I place the painting in a white double mat, package it securely, and ship it to the address you specify. Note: If the portrait is a gift, I will gift-wrap it for you and include a personalized note card featuring the portrait at no additional charge. If you provided hardcopy reference photos, those will be mailed back to you.

Shipping

Commission fees do not include shipping. Shipping charges for handling, packaging, insurance, and postage to continental U.S. addresses ranges from $10 to $45 (depending on artwork size and other factors). For international shipments, get in touch to discuss the specifics and I will provide a quote for shipping.
