I am a self-taught watercolor artist who specializes in painting dogs. Dogs fascinate me for a lot of reasons: their apparently endless capacity to be comically serious or seriously comical; the soulful and joyful expression of their emotions; and the intriguing variety in shape, form, color, and purpose. It never gets old to try and capture the unique expression, personality, and emotion of canine subjects in my paintings. The bottom line is, I love dogs and therefore I love to paint them!
When not obsessing on dogs, I enjoy painting complex, close-cropped floral and foliage scenes with bold light and shadow play. The technical and artistic challenges of translating such visual puzzles into compelling paintings are extremely enjoyable. In the process, it is impossible not to be awed by Nature’s diverse beauty.
I work out of my Brindle Studio in Castleton, Virginia, where I am “assisted” by a trio of entertaining but not particularly hard-working terriers. When not in the studio, I enjoy trail riding, camping, and occasionally foxhunting with my 18-hand mule Emma; rambling around in the woods with my dogs; reading; and day trips to sketch at various locations around Virginia. I am a member of Bull Run Hunt (where I also served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary for several years).
